Growing Together Is A Struggle

Marriage is a wonderful thing. God in His infinite wisdom knew that to be alone in this world is not right. We all need someone to be there for us; a partner to share life with. Alone time is good but too much of anything is harmful. So God created marriage. Where two become one, bonded together for life.Husband helping Wife on Swing

Why is there a struggle in marriage then, if God created it then it must be perfect, natural. When God created marriage in the beginning there was no sin in the world. The two (Adam & Eve) lived in harmony with God and with each other. But then when sin came in; when both chose to disobey God, both became sinners, choosing their own desires over the other.

Marriage is a struggle because our individual desires come in conflict with our marriage. It may be selfishness, anger, self centeredness, whatever the case may be, our sinful self creates friction in our marriage. So the struggle continues throughout our lifetime together. Yes it does get better with time, but the struggle is still there.

Issues That Threaten A Marriage

Communication – Individuals often have trouble sharing their emotions with their mate. Men seem to have more trouble in this area than women but that is not a “set-in-stone” principle. Contrary to what the world tries to tell us men and women are different and it is not just about our sexuality. Men and Women think differently and react differently. Men do tend to be more visual-oriented and women do tend to be more relationship oriented. But there are many other differences that threaten a marriage’s stability.

Spiritual-Disconnect – God created marriage to be a bond physically and spiritually. Differences in spiritual beliefs will cause a struggle in a marriage. A common trend today among churches finds that women are more involved than the men. It could be that women tend to be concerned more about relationships but I believe it is also caused by men stepping away from their spiritual responsibility as leaders. Whatever the case may be a spiritual disconnect between a husband and a wife will cause a marriage to struggle.

Differences in life Goals – Since God created marriage to be a bond, a “oneness” between a man and a woman if both partners do not agree on common goals there is stress and the marriage will struggle.

Would A Couples Devotional Help A Marriage

Simply put, would a common desire to study the word of God together help a marriage face the struggles that life will bring? The answer to that question is a definite yes. The more time that couples devote to learning God’s desire for their life the stronger their marriage becomes. The stronger the marriage, the easier it is to face the struggles of life together.Couple reading Bible together

Reading the Bible together, studying together, sitting in Sunday School class together helps build communication.

The more time we spend learning of God and learning how he wants us to live righteously, the stronger we grow spiritually, and the more we bond together.

As we study together seeking God’s will for our life and our marriage we begin to seek goals that is pleasing to God. When we seek common goals as a couple; seeking the best for our marriage, not the best for us as an individual, our goals become bonded for the best of the marriage and our struggles are lessened.

What is so Special About the Love Languages Devotional Bible

To be honest any Bible could be used to help a couple grow together. What makes this particular Bible so special is that it is designed with built-in devotionals throughout both Old and New Testament. It is designed to help couples connect spiritually. I like it because the weekly devotions focus on small parts of the text and if you followed it all year long not only will you grow as a couple you will see parts of the whole Bible in the process, from Genesis through Revelation.

Have you ever struggled to read and understand Leviticus? While it may seem boring or gory to many, there are many things we can learn about our relationship with God and others there. The 6 devotionals in Leviticus teach us about; offering the best, wise investments, understanding differences, symbols of love, faithfulness, and stewardship.

And if your mate is not very spiritual at the moment this devotional source will help you understand how to be there for your wife or husband. I have used it many times just as a personal devotional source. When you add in the fact that this Bible is printed in The New Living Translation (NLT) reading this Bible gives you a down to earth translation that is true to the original text.

Conclusion

I would recommend this Devotional Bible to anyone who desires to grow in their faith. It has great devotional material, easy to read content and by design is the perfect choice for a couple who want to grow closer to God and each other.

I know marriage is a struggle. In our 50-plus years of marriage there have been many struggles, some of them were really rough to get through. It is only by God’s grace that we have made it so far. But, if I could have had this Bible 50 years ago and developed the habit of taking time each day to study together with my wife, many of those struggles we had would have been simple to solve.

This is a perfect choice for the newly-wed or the seasoned couple who want to grow their marriage God’s way.
